Peace and freedom to the citizens of Russia! No to war!

Hello, ... Thank you so much for supporting me all this time. The dates are missing from your earlier letters, but I think you’ve been writing to me for more than a year—since August of last year. Charles has already become like family to me. I remember how worried I was about whether he would stay with you and adapt. But deep down, I never doubted that everything would be fine because it’s fate, a sign from above. The little green mosquitoes that don’t bite but fly in huge swarms—those are the chironomids. They were specially brought to these places to artificially breed fish that needed feeding. But then those water reservoirs overgrew with grass, and the chironomids multiplied along the Azov Sea coast. They don’t fly for long, but in impressive numbers. I was once caught by their massive take-off. It was in the evening and lasted all night. In the morning, the sea breeze blew them somewhere. When they approached, the horizon turned dark, and there was a hum. I didn’t know what it was at first. Then they just swarmed around us; we floated in a broth of chironomids. I haven’t watched «My Neighbor Totoro,» although I know about that cartoon. From Miyazaki, I’ve seen «Spirited Away» and «Howl’s Moving Castle.» Maybe something else, but I don’t remember. When I’m released, I’ll certainly try to watch that cartoon since you love it so much.

I don’t know how to explain it, but I feel like this summer has been exceptionally wonderful. I realized this from the air, the sky, the sunsets that I can now see from the window. This is the second summer I’ve spent in prison. But the past somehow just passed. This one — it’s a shame that it’s passing, and I part with it with a kind of poignant longing. It was a marvelous summer. Or maybe it’s just from being locked up for so long. We’ll see how I feel in the autumn. And how I will perceive the next, third summer in captivity. And knock on wood, who knows...

I’ve caught your rays of warmth. Sending back rays of good mood and smiles. Take care of yourself.
